How to Choose the Right Box Size for Shipping
Measure correctly, leave the right clearance and save on freight with a box that actually fits your product.

Always measure inner dimensions
Box sizes are quoted as inner length × breadth × height. Measure your product (or product plus inner packaging) at its widest points, and give those figures to your supplier. Outer dimensions are larger by the board thickness — about 3–4 mm for 3 ply and 6–8 mm for 5 ply.
Leave the right clearance
For rigid products, add about 5–10 mm on each side for easy packing. For fragile items that need bubble wrap or paper fill, allow 25–50 mm on every side for cushioning. Too much empty space lets the product move and increases the risk of damage.
Length, breadth, height — in that order
Length is the longer side of the opening, breadth the shorter side, and height the depth from the opening to the base. Getting the order right matters because flaps are cut on the length and breadth.
Watch volumetric weight
Couriers charge by the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (usually L × B × H in cm ÷ 5000). An oversized box can double your shipping cost. Right-sizing boxes is one of the easiest ways to cut logistics spend.
Standard sizes vs custom sizes
Stock sizes are faster and cheaper for small quantities. If you ship the same product in volume, a custom size made to fit exactly will usually pay for itself in lower freight and less filler material.
