3 Ply vs 5 Ply vs 7 Ply: Which Box Should You Choose?
Understand board layers, load capacity and how to pick the right corrugated box strength for your product.

What does ply mean?
Ply is the number of paper layers in a corrugated board. A 3 ply board has two flat liners with one fluted (wavy) layer between them — a single wall. A 5 ply board adds a second flute and liner (double wall), and 7 ply adds a third (triple wall). Each extra wall adds stiffness, stacking strength and puncture resistance.
3 ply — single wall
The most widely used shipping box. 3 ply cartons are light, economical and strong enough for apparel, cosmetics, books, accessories and most e-commerce parcels up to roughly 8–10 kg. They are the default choice for courier dispatch and retail packing, and the easiest to print on.
5 ply — double wall
5 ply boxes are built for heavier or more fragile goods: electronics, glassware, kitchen appliances, FMCG master cartons and anything stacked several layers high in a warehouse or truck. The second wall resists crushing and corner damage far better on long journeys and rough handling.
7 ply — triple wall
7 ply cartons are used for industrial parts, machinery components, auto spares, export shipments and very heavy loads. They are the strongest standard corrugated construction and often replace wooden crates for medium-weight industrial goods — at a fraction of the weight and cost.
Ply is not the whole story
Two boxes with the same ply can perform very differently. Paper grade (GSM), the flute profile (A, B, C or E) and the bursting strength of the board matter just as much. A 3 ply box made with 150 GSM high-strength kraft paper can outperform a 5 ply box made from light, recycled paper.
Quick selection guide
Up to about 5 kg and courier shipping: 3 ply. 5–20 kg, fragile items, or boxes stacked more than four high: 5 ply. Above 20 kg, export freight or industrial parts: 7 ply. When in doubt, test a sample with your actual product and packing method.
How to order the right box
Tell your manufacturer the product weight, inner dimensions, how the boxes will be stacked and how far they will travel. With that, Yamuna Packaging can recommend the right ply and paper grade so you are not paying for strength you do not need — or risking damage with a box that is too weak.
